March 14, 21 and 28 The Family in Recovery – Anna Agnew, LCSW-C, Private Practice and Training Consultant, Adjunct Faculty at Harford Community College, Belair, MD – 21 Hours
Addiction is sometimes called a “family disease” since it affects the entire family. This course will focus upon three central themes of a family system: belonging/inclusion, leadership/control, and intimacy/affection. When the family is in active addiction and in recovery, these three central themes can be disruptive to the family’s healthy functioning. Practitioners aware of the stages a family encounters in addiction and recovery can better address the patient(s) and their family through the recovery process. Attention will be given to emotional relapse during discussion of the central themes.
This course applies toward the specialized training requirement for the State of Maryland’s position classification of Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counselor, Advanced.

On Chemical Dependence and Human Development – Greg Hunter, MCP, MS, LCSW-C, CISD, Therapist and Trainer in Private Practice, Baltimore, MD – 21 Hours
This course examines the relationship between human development and the counseling process. Utilizing the psychosocial perspective originally developed by Erik Erikson, counselors will be provided with a useful conceptual framework for understanding the developmental issues as they appear in the therapeutic process. This perspective will be used to assist the patient to have a broader picture of their individual struggle, and to understand the various stages of their lives.

Motivational Interviewing to Increase Retention and Engagement – Christine Higgins, Dissemination Specialist, Mid-Atlantic Clinical Trials Network, Baltimore, MD – 21 Hours
This course is designed to help participants develop skills and techniques in treatment planning and initial counseling visits that are within the framework of Motivational Interviewing, which is based on the Trans-theoretical Model of the Stages of Change. Participants will develop patient goals derived from an assessment of the patient’s stage of change, and practice selected intervention techniques commonly used within the Pre-Contemplation, Contemplation, and Preparation stages to stimulate change processes. Selected techniques include “active listening” and opening strategies that include open-ended questions, reflective listening, summarizing, and affirming. Participants will learn ways to identify and modify resistance using different kinds of reflection: simple, amplified, and double-sided reflection. Together, we will develop a practice that is patient-centered (increases self-esteem and self-efficacy) and takes the burden off the counselor to “fix” the problem.
Prerequisite: This is not an introductory level workshop. Participants should be familiar with MI core principles, and have experience with using basic MI skills.
